Salvage the Bones
by Jesmyn Ward
Well, I was really wrong about this book the first time I tried to read it (and ended up giving up).
While it is a very, very difficult read, it is also an excellent book. It tells the visceral and harrowing tale, mythological in scope, of a Black family living in poverty in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina. And like in many a Greek tragedy, this family faces many trials before the brutal culmination.
And yet, there is still triumph, and still hope, even if it is rather dim. And I found myself at the end wishing fiercely for some happiness and some luck to come this family’s way.
