Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare

5.0

I LOVED this book! Take your typical ya dystopian novel, sprinkle it with a little Game of Thrones … put it in the oven for a bit. That is this book! Perfect! Enticing! Delectable! A fun adult fantasy novel centred around a conspiracy of power that still has that classic Cassandra Clare feeling to it. And, as per Cassie’s style, an amazing cast of characters. If you are ready for a new obsession … pick up this book!

AHHHHH! Another Cassandra Clare book. If you know me, you already know I’m going to say I loved it. AND I DID! If you took a typical ya fantasy/dystopian novel and sprinkled it with a little bit of Game of Thrones. Put it in the oven for a bit. That is this book! Perfect! Enticing! Delectable!

The mythology, worldbuilding, and diverse cast of characters made for a very intriguing story about a conspiracy of power. I am always a sucker for the complicated interrelationship between the government (the crown in this case) and large crime organizations. They both rule in their own sense and both equally need each other. Cassandra Clare brought this phenomenon to the centre plot of her novel.

We also got to see a diverse cast of characters (Though I do wonder what happened to the one boy, Cas, we met at the very beginning; I would like to have seen more of him). The story switches between two interesting perspectives that become even more interesting as they begin to intersect. It offered two different views on the same world, showing both the light and the darkness of Castellane. Inside that was the contrast of two female characters' responses to being women in a male-dominated world. This did mean that there were several sexist moments that I personally did not enjoy, but were likely purposeful in order to demonstrate this idea.

All in all, I LOVED it! The book reached its peak just as it ran out of pages. I literally exclaimed aloud “Woah, that was a good ending”. That's how good it was. Now … hey Cassie … when’s the next book?
