Love and Other Words
by Christina Lauren
This book took me right back to the feeling of being a teenager in love—giddy, shy, and totally caught up in the magic of first love. The flashbacks between the two main characters, with all their awkward moments and growing closeness, had me kicking my feet in excitement. I couldn’t help but wish every girl had an Elliot in her life. His connection with Macy felt so pure, and their secret reading closet was such a sweet spot for them to escape and bond over their love of books.
The only thing holding me back from giving this a full 5 stars was the way the author handled Elliot’s backstory. His trauma was glossed over, and it felt like the serious issues he faced weren’t fully addressed. The way his story was brushed off, especially when it came to his past experience with abuse, left me feeling like an important part of his character was left untold.
