Queen of the Conquered
by Kacen Callender
This was a frustrating book. It ended up not being at all what I expected, mainly because of the POV character (I can’t call her a heroine bc she’s not the hero). I kept waiting for her to realize the problems in her thinking, in her actions, but she’d double down instead. I get where the author was going with the character, but I’m not a fan of characters I can’t root for. I’m not sure why they thought she was maybe redeemable in the end because at every step, she chose wrong. She knew what was right, she felt guilty and acknowledged she was lying to herself, but still the power was more desirable than helping her people. It was an unflinching look into racism, privilege, slavery, but I felt a little tricked by Sigourney being the antihero. The writing itself was hard to get into because Sigourney can read people’s thoughts so there’s a lot of telling. I felt like the climax/big reveal was a bit of a let down because of it. It’s just a long explanation as she reads the thoughts and realizes what’s going on. I mostly kept going to read about Loren and now I’m sucked into reading his book which will also hopefully have less telling since he can’t read thoughts.
