The Complication by Suzanne Young

2.0

It took me the full six books of this series to finally narrow down what I like and dislike about the whole thing: I love the premise, the dystopia, the sci-fi, etc. I dislike the characters and everything to do with their interpersonal relationships. When the books focused on the greater scheme of The Program/The Grief Department, I was most intrigued. When they focused on the character romances and friendships, I could not care less. All of my issues calling these books "cheesy," "immature," or "annoying," were because of the CHARACTERS and how they interacted with each other. I cannot commend the author enough for creating the society built up within this series because it is a brilliant idea, but I feel it seriously lacks in impact because of how the characters were written into it. This, to me, would have thrived as a sci-fi dystopia series rather than trying to make each book intertwined with romance.

As for The Complication specifically, I (of course) have the same "complaints" as before. Immature characters making rash and poor decisions in the name of "love," abrupt/rushed ending, and the feeling of trying to cram in as much "punch" near the end as possible. I did enjoy the convergence of all the mini-series, but some of it felt forced just trying to make it all fit together. The revelations about The Program and the science/creation behind it were the best parts of this book.

In all, this series makes me feel conflicted. The premise was so good (4/5 stars) but the character execution was so poor in my opinion (1.5/5 stars).
