Being Nobody is the first book in the romantic suspense series entitled Witness by author H. D'Agostino. This had a premise that caught my attention because it was one that I can't recall I had ever come across before--a woman who has spent nearly two decades of her life in witness protection due to a crime her father witnessed falls in love with a man and contemplates risking her safety to be with him. Samantha Connelly is now twenty-six and she's changed her name countless times, a pre-requisite each time she and her parents were forced to move to another location. She's lost hope that she'll ever be able to go back to just being Sam, but when she meets a man named Brian Sellers, who for all intents and purposes, could bring a lot of trouble Sam's way due to his "job", she quickly falls in love and wants to start a life with him.

Sam has no choice but to keep her identity and circumstances from Brian. She's kept secrets before, but only once did she ever contemplate not moving when told by their handler, and that was when she had fallen in love at seventeen. Now, she's falling in love again, and now that she's older, she believes she's more than ready to run the risk of being found by those after her family for the sake of being with Brian. But Brian, too, has his own cache of secrets, and these secrets are just as explosive as Sam's. Sam may love Brian, but could she love the man behind the facade? On the other hand, Brian is in love with Sam, but will he still love her after he learns who she is and what she's been hiding? The story is all about trying to be nobody when all you really want is for that one person to see you--a somebody--for the you you truly are.

The story isn't too long, but there were moments that I felt it dragged a bit. I had a feeling I knew who Brian really was early on, simply because their instincts both gave them that inkling of recognition. While there is that supposedly immediate connection between Sam and Brian, it was difficult to fully embrace the idea that they had fallen in love as quickly as they did, even with the hidden history between them. It's difficult for me to get into it without giving away spoilers, but let's just say that I wanted more from a particular time in Sam's past so as to provide a more plausible foundation for a more intense romance. Even though I already had the sequel waiting for me, the cliffhanger ending floored me, but I'll get into that in my review for the second book. Being Nobody had potential but it missed out a tad, so three stars. ♥
