A Friend for Dragon by Dav Pilkey

3.0

Written by Dav Pilkey of Dog Man and Captain Underpants fame. There are about 5 - 7 lines of text on a page, some have 2 - 3. Dragon Characters are fun and friendly-looking. Scholastic Acorn book series, ideal for K - 2nd graders and ELL students. Split in to 5 chapters and about 50 pages with a pretty easy "how to draw Dragon" at the back which should be appropriate for the target audience of readers. I like how the book has meaningful friend lessons like "friends always share" and "friends are good listeners." However, overall the book was actually kind of sad. It starts out as a snake tricking Dragon in to thinking an apple was talking and wanted to be his friend. So then he spends some time with apple talking to him and he never answers. Apple gets eaten to his core, turns brown and Dragon buries him and cries and is lonely. It made me a bit sad to read and it ended with Dragon looking up to see an apple tree full of apples and being happy but I just thought, "sadness. They won't talk to him either."
