This was a five star read until the very end. I was really into the worldbuilding, character dynamics, and the mystery. But then we find out a confidant is the secret villain , which ughhh I’m tired of this narrative device. And then the symbol on Garrin’s family portrait is the same symbol as the wards, yet no one else ever connected it? Not even Matsin who saw the ward on the ship?? I find it hard to believe . Finally, the book ended on a really tense cliffhanger, leaving me in a bad state of mind.
Graphic: Blood, Death, Slavery, Violence, and Torture
Minor: Rape
It really is comparable to Holly Black’s Cruel Prince series
