"I do feel a kind of regret that I’ll never be close with my father, a kind of mourning for what could have been. But I’m also so angry that it feels like poison is coursing through my veins."

I mostly really liked this, and I absolutely adored Daniel and Rex (and Daniel and Ginger's friendship <3). I usually love more of a slowburn, but I actually found it really refreshing that the relationship develops fairly early on but that there's then a lot of focus on both characters working through their respective traumas and coming to understand how to be together in a healthy way. There's a lot of super heavy stuff in here, but the overarching beautiful love story definitely balances it out.

The only thing I wasn't really a fan of is how Leo's character is dealt with. A lot of the parts involving him just really rubbed me up the wrong way, and it would've been so easy to just change a few small aspects and get rid of the uncomfortableness. I also don't think that I'll continue the series, as I'm not at all convinced that the next book's protagonist at all deserves a redemption arc...but I did overall really like this one as a standalone!
