Ever so fatphobic and only made slightly redeemable by Mandy’s dad.

Not Wilson’s best book, the trauma and gritty reality so synonymous with her work is only surface level here. Creating a story that feels mismatched in tone and pacing. Characters were unlikeable and the relationships were one dimensional. A longer story would have allowed for more developed story telling and a greater exploration of emotions relating to difficult life situations.

Mandy’s dad seemed to be the only adult capable of rational thought and consideration for a teenager experiencing a  traumatic situation. Whilst, it is often the case that children in these circumstances face stigma. In a book that merely describes these situations rather than explaining or providing nuance of parental fear vs rational thought it may suggest to young readers that care experienced children are to be avoided.

Also how many pre-teens in the late 90s were using ‘ever so’ that consistently??
