Blimey ‘eck this one is dark.
The care home section was definitely the first glimpse of what the story would become, and my goodness it didn’t let up from there.
It was all terrifying, but fuck me, the last 15% or so was HARROWING. The blurb on the front of the book is true, I didn’t just read this book, I lived it. If I hadn’t only read it in short bursts, either my mind or body may have given out.
And to Nevill’s massive credit, nothing about the book felt gratuitous or included only to artificially boost the horror-vibes. It was a story that just happened to be horrific.
My one slight criticism is that some of the descriptions – namely of landscapes and the sky – read slightly convoluted, and were a little difficult to get through at times. But this in no way impacted the rest of the story and the ordeal of reading it.
