esmejones 's review for:
A Study in Drowning
by Ava Reid
having anticipated this book for months, i do admit i may have slightly sabotaged myself with high expectations, since I know Ava Reid is capable of brilliant things (ie The Juniper Tree). also, this is her first YA, which was unfortunately painfully obvious as it adhered to every stereotypical cliché of a YA novel. HOWEVER, i really really enjoyed this book and the world building was absolutely incredible, with the creation of a whole new literary universe being of significant interest to me. the settings and the plot were excellent, yet i do wish that everything the book promised had been carried out as i was left a bit unsatisfied at the end. + i wish she had gone more into the whole fairy king lore that was my favourite bit but was only mentioned sporadically and infrequently!
