I struggled with this book and found i couldn't wait for it to end. I was really excited to read this with it being a NYT #1 bestseller but I found that almost nothing seemed to happen for the first 60% of the book, I found the characters very two dimensional, and I didnt really care what happened to any of them. I feel more time could have been spent on making the characters PEOPLE rather than just elements of the plot, as I think for me the story would have been a lot more enjoyable if I didnt find the characters so flat.
I agreed with everything she wrote but personally didn't like the way she wrote it, as I think that colonialism is something really important to learn about and understand, and I appreciate it not being sugar coated but, again, it felt like a very muddled plot and I just didnt like the story either. Giving 2.5 stars because I felt there were a few elements that I was more gripped by and the ending was good, but overall very underwhelmed, because I read and enjoyed the Poppy War so expected better from this book.
