A Court of Thorns and Roses
by Sarah J. Maas
Warning: contains spoilers
I have been on a fantasy reading break for a couple of years, because I'd just had enough of weak heroines or worse the inspiring ones that turned absolutely useless the second a man entered the story.
I started reading this with an open mind and hoping for the best, because whenever I asked, I was told I wouldn't be disappointed.
But I was. I liked the world building part and that was about it. The characters were predictable, flat and boring. The villain was the most interesting character, but even she was a caricature and just ridiculous. The riddle and the trials she made Feyre go through were just stupid. Why would she risk everything on that obvious riddle, that a small child could have worked out. Why?!
Feyre was so disappointing, but I kept hoping she would eventually turn into the heroine I wanted, despite her being annoyingly dim-witted. But then she got turned into a high fae, and that's when I almost threw the book out the window. No, absolutely no! Being human and flawed was what made her special, made her relatable-ish.
I could honestly go on about the issues with this novel. But I feel like I've already made myself a living target for everyone who loves this book. 😅
Somehow I have been talked into reading the next book, because that's the good one...? I promise I'll stay optimistic and give it a fair chance. But it better blow me away!
