You can definitely see how this book influenced 1984.  The way we described it in our book club, the characters were more interesting, but the worldbuilding in 1984 was much stronger and thus it became a better touchstone for ideological verbal shortcuts (ironically).

I enjoyed the story, but as a whole piece it suffers from, hm, being a product of the storyteller?  It could have been cool if the storytelling evolved with the narrator, but if we're being honest,
he never did, he was only manipulated into creating that opportunity for others.

Warning: be careful when listening to the translator's note beforehand, it contains major spoilers.
