Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

The story wasn't as compelling to me as Thomas' other work (we do know everything that will happen at the end in advance) but I so enjoy her writing.
I loved the scene where Maverick puts his baby into the crib and goes outside because he is so overwhelmed, then is filled with guilt. His friend tells him that going back when you calm down is what really matters, and this reflects everything that I've heard from medical professionals who deal with child neglect and abuse. Raising children is stressful, and when you feel like you've reached a breaking point, walking away for a few minutes won't do your child any long term harm. Coming back is what makes you a stable, committed parent.
