Lady of the Eternal City by Kate Quinn
2.0

I devoured the other books in the series, but I did not enjoy this one. While the other books in the series had their twists and deaths, overall they were fun. This book is just SO dreary and dark compared to the rest. It comes out of no where. It was not an enjoyable surprise.

The main characters have always been morally dubious, it made the books enjoyable. In this book, I think their mistakes/flaws made them unlikable. I've never been a huge fan of Sabina's borderline manic pixieness, but it always seemed to be portrayed as a fault of hers. There were attempts to portray Sabina as wisened, calmer and more mature in this novel...but she still comes of selfish and self-absorbed to me.

Vix's character devolves into nonsense for me. This book undoes all his growth and development, none of his choices make any sense. I think it was a mistake having him be the narrative voice when this series is supposed to be about women coping with Ancient Rome's social structure.

Anti-heros can be great, but I felt that the novel didn't treat them as anti-heros. It felt as if all their horrible life choices were being excused so that true love could conquer all. Weak story-telling in my mind.
