Minus the Outlander series, this was my first foray into early pre-American Revolution historical romance. Not that the main plot depends much on knowledge of that historical setting. It primarily focuses on a story about how Conner, a Scottish immigrant who was somewhat raised by some local Native American Indians and who was later forced into British service via blackmail, is now being forced into rescuing the niece of his blackmailer. The niece, Sarah, turns out to have some family ties to British royalty but is in the colonies for reasons she wishes to keep hidden for fear of public scorn.
I did not read the previous two books, so there was definitely some back story I was missing. However, I don't think it took too much away and could still be read as a standalone.
