The Days of Abandonment
by Elena Ferrante
This, to me, has left the firm soil of unhinged woman literature far behind and catapulted itself into detestable woman literature. I hated almost every second.
While a descent into despair and rage after marital abandonment can be a great base for the story of a woman finding herself anew, battling betrayal and the rawness this leaves her with, i seriously draw the line at this: depictions of animal abuse, fantasizing about slapping your kids and calling the teenager your husband groomed a whore over and over again. Not one deeper thought or reflection on this whatsoever.
Additionally, I found the profanity and acute rages the character inhabits for periods of time neither refreshing nor interesting in the slightest, but rather deeply uninspired, just like that vacuous ending.
