Madame Restell was a very fascinating woman, and this history of abortion in the 1800s was enlightening, and also uncomfortably similar to today. The writing style was very accessible, but a little too limited in some places. I didn't appreciate the more modern asides from the author, like remarking on how Madame Restell might behave on twitter. Additionally, there were sometimes claims that I think didn't have enough evidence or were not expanded on enough. The one that stood out to me the most was the assumption that Madame Restell must have treated women of color, because a Black woman was aware of her and gave her information to a friend. I would have liked some more digging on this topic, especially since the book does not really cover race much in regards to women's rights at the time.
