Argylle by Elly Conway
2.0
we all understand that this was just cobbled together as a marketing ploy to increase hype for the movie right?
the book wasn't terrible, there were some moments and characters that i liked, such as Carter and Wyatt (although i think Carter's plotline with her parents could have been better fleshed out) and i did read it very quickly
argylle as a character had the potential to be interesting, with his backstory, but just kind of felt like every other cardboard cut out spy character and ended up falling rather flat for me ?
parts of the book did feel rather info dumpy to me but that may well have just been that i already knew a lot about the historical period/event being discussed (shout out to Josh from Expedition Unknown)
full of 'America is the greatest' imagery when all i wanted was a fun spy novel
characters were forgettable and easily confused and supporting characters had little impact
the twist reveal about a certain character was incredibly predictable and obvious yet all the characters seemed shocked by it when i'd been saying it was going to happen since halfway through the book
the minor romance subplot had no chemistry, i could not see a reason that they actually liked each other apart from the fact they each thought the other was hot?
also her eyes being described as changing colour based on the light made me laugh, don't hit me with that fanfic 'i'm not like other girls' vibe
i have not seen the movie yet but have seen some parts and it seems alright so maybe skip the book and just go watch the film if you want?
