I adore Georgette Heyer, but Envious Casca didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The setup had promise—Christmas, a country house, a dysfunctional family—but the mystery was oddly inaccessible. Unless you happen to have a very specific bit of background knowledge (no spoilers, but…really?), the clues feel more frustrating than fair. 

As usual, there’s a romance thread tucked into the chaos, but even that lacked the spark and sharpness I’ve come to expect from Heyer. It’s not a bad read, just not one of her stronger ones. 
 

Maybe not the place to start if you’re new to her mysteries—unless you enjoy being completely baffled while snowed in with unlikeable relatives.
