In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead
3.0
Jessica is attending her 10 year college reunion. During her senior year, her roommate, Heather, was murdered which caused their group of 7 friends to drift apart. At the reunion, heathers brother Eric confronts them and says he knows one of them did it.
Everyone had a motive, and no one had an airtight alibi. As the book progresses, various people are ruled out. Jessica blacked out the night of the murder and even suspects herself at one point.
One person was gay. One used steroids. One took Chinese diet pills and gave them to heather the night she died (I think they made her sleepy although I may have misunderstood that since diet pills are uppers). One sold drugs. And the other spied on everyone else. Jessica’s boyfriend Mint had no motive.
When heather passed out Frank took her home. He put her in Jessica’s bed by mistake. Mint, a subtle misogynist throughout the book, was angry that Jessica’s professor forced her to sleep with him for a letter or rec. mint blamed Jessica and tried to kill her, not knowing it was heather in the bed.
When confronted in the present day he attacks Jessica before being pushed out of a window by Eric.
The characters were interesting although the mystery itself suffered because it ad a pattern of suspicion being placed on one person until they were cleared. Mint was an asshole in subtle ways but it was there from the start so while the specific circumstances weren’t obvious his guilt was easy to guess.
