I wanted to like this book so much. I had very high expectations from the start which was probably why it failed to meet them.
The book follows first hand accounts of like a dozen women which was far too many imo. The main plot is an outbreak of a highly contagious and deadly virus that hunts only men and the aftermath of the world as a result of a 90% female population.
I think my biggest gripe was the constantly changing perspectives. And truthfully, none of the women were particularly interesting. And some of the characters had one or two bits about them and then they disappeared. Why even include them at that point? Also the novel focused a lot on grief (which makes complete sense cuz everyone is losing fathers, husbands, and sons) but it was just too much. This wasn’t supposed to be a story about dealing with the loss of loved ones. I also didn’t like the huge emphasis on baby making. I understand the global population suffered a huge blow, but can we cool it on the obsession with pregnancy?
Going into this novel I expected to read a lot about how the world changed to better suit women as the majority and how sexual, political, and other violence disappeared. And while it did touch on that a little, I felt the major points got diluted and lost quite a bit. Wouldn’t say I’d recommend this book to anyone.
