Stitches by David Small

5.0

Reading this book in the aftermath of other graphic novel memoirs gives me a different perspective than if this had been my first. I see now how a multitude of personal stories can be shaped or woven beautifully out of a life lived in the shadow of tremendous secrets, misunderstandings, and pain. I also see how devistating, alienating, and isolating that pain can be. David Small's story is a short 1-sitting read I'd highly recommend to friends and family as both a cautionary tale and one of survival. Above all, brilliant ink-wash illustrations lend magic to soften and deepen the impact of what is written here.
