Washington Black
by Esi Edugyan
This book wanders so far from where it starts and then manages to come full circle by the end (though not geographically). It is an extremely well written story about Washington Black, a slave in the West Indies, who gets taken under the wing of the science-minded brother of the plantation master. Wash twists and turns his way through the Caribbean, America, Antarctica, Canada, London, Amsterdam and Morocco. Along the way, Wash witnesses several horrors, eludes bounty hunters, fosters his artistic talent, discovers ocean life, falls in love, creates the world’s first aquarium, and wrestles with his own history... I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because some of the scientific parts dragged for me.
