Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
2.0
What ruined this book for me is the lack of interesting or compelling characters. The author uses the idealistic idiot and jaded detective tropes to animate his two heroes, and that's pretty much it in terms of characterization. There are only two real female characters - one of them is increasingly sexualized throughout the book and ends up being reduced to Main Character's Girlfriend by the end. The other also starts out interesting but ends up becoming Other Main Character's Maiden in Distress.
In spite of the insipid characters, who would have killed any other book, I'm giving it 3 stars. The author was ambitious and creative in his world-building, and the mystery that drives the plot was compelling. His attention to detail and wonderful prose made Leviathan Wakes an enjoyable read when I wasn't secretly hoping all the characters would die.
