Simple Passion
by Annie Ernaux
emotional
reflective
slow-paced
"I experience pleasure like a future pain."
Ernaux blends real life and fiction so effortlessly, in this short novella. The book follows her feelings throughout and after an affair with a married man. I say fiction, as whilst this is based on real events, the story isn't the focus on the book, but rather her feelings on everything, which are written much like one would for a character. It's very much implied that she wrote all of this down, and that the world went on around her. This is one small part of her life, one she embellishes to make into the character we see in the novel.
