This was a very enjoyable and well-researched book, though I found the "book" in the title somewhat of an exaggeration, as only the last 1/3 or so of the book is really about Jessie's book work.

A fictionalised telling of the true story of Jessie and other "CARDS", American women who volunteered in Northern France from 1918 onwards, just 40 miles from the front line, helping to clear farmland, rebuild homes and provide schooling and books to returning locals.

The women were truly inspiring and just make me realise quite how disengaged people are nowadays as I'm pretty sure not too many people would be volunteering now in quite the same way.
