Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
3.5
dark emotional mysterious reflective slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Juniper (June, Junie?) is one of the most irritating main characters I've ever read, which made for a really fun and interesting way to explore the necessary commentary on race, publishing and internet culture.
Some of the references (especially regarding twitter/social media) felt a bit overdone and tiresome, but maybe that was the point. I also feel the pacing was off at some points. But overall, Yellowface is compelling,  provocative, and important. Hopefully it continues to spark important conversations regarding race, authorship, and cultural appropriation.

On a side note; I'm annoyed that June, instead of fading into the ether, wants to write another book where she comes out as the hero, but I guess some of us white women don't know when to shut up.
