Hero at the Fall
by Alwyn Hamilton
Rebel of the Sands ★★★★
Traitor to the Throne ★★★★
I have suffered the exact same fate I did when I read the second book EVEN THOUGH I told myself I wouldn’t.
Despite loving this series, I managed to despise the first 100 pages all because I couldn’t remember a damn thing about this series before reading this book.
To be fair, it has been almost two and a half years since I read the last book so I didn’t really expect myself to remember everything clearly. But considering this happened to me while reading the second book and I even told myself in my review of Traitor to the Throne that because I forgot I would try read the third book as soon as possible and if I couldn’t remember I would reread the series.
And of course, that did not happen. Even though I owned the book for almost a year, I thought that if I read detailed summaries of the first two books, everything would be fine. Everything was NOT fine. I read those summaries months ago when I first tried to read this book. Since then it’s been constant picking this book up and putting it back down. So even though I read the summaries several months ago, I decided I would not need to reread them because again I thought I would be fine.
At this point, I don’t know if the plot is just forgettable because this happened with the second book or if it’s just me(it is most definitely my fault, but I am trying to make myself feel better).
One thing I need to discuss first is that this series HAS WAYYYYYY TOO MANY CHARACTERS. Honestly, it was so hard for me to keep up and remember anyone. Luckily at the front of my copy was a character list with descriptions but it was annoying for the first half to have to keep turning to it to identify who's who. Eventually, I could remember them, but that was towards the second half of the book, which honestly is a bit late to finally know which character is who. Even then, I occasionally had to turn back to it.
With all that aside after 150 pages or so, I FINALLY started to get interested in this book. I began to remember why I loved this series in the first place. The world-building is fantastic, and it's full of so much detail. To me it, the world created was quite unique, which stopped it from feeling like every other fantasy book. In the last 200 pages, I could not stop reading. It was full of so much action and just like the first book had many twists. I ended up really liking it.
However, because I couldn’t remember much, it really impacted my enjoyment of the book. The second half could not make up for the fact that ultimately, I didn’t have a strong attachment to these characters and the plot. Despite me forgetting, I felt no pull to finish this series. In other words, whether I finished or not, I wouldn’t have cared. I only wanted to continue because recently I’m trying to push myself to complete all the series I’ve started and with me already owning this book and having liked the first two books I forced myself to finish.
As much as I am sad to give this series only 3 stars, the things that happened in this book didn’t move me as they would if they had happened to other characters in a different series I had loved. This series was all 4 stars until this book, and maybe this is because I left this series for so long or maybe not. I guess it is kind of my fault.
I did love this series overall, and it had a very interesting world and storyline. I would still recommend it!!
