Of Flame and Fury
by Mikayla Bridge
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio for providing me an early copy of this audiobook.
I love phoenixes, so when I saw the description for this one included phoenix racing, I was so excited to give it a listen.
Unfortunately, other than the phoenix racing itself, I never really felt fully pulled into this one.
The weaknesses for me were definitely in the world building and character development.
The world building was largely absent; I never felt like I really settled in or understood the world at all.
There were several side characters I wanted to care for, but I just never felt like I got to know them.
As for the MC, Kel, I thought she was fine? And the love interest, Coup, was also fine? Their romance was also, just fine, and maybe a little abrupt in how it began. Like there are brewing feelings, and then BAM, here we go.
Ultimately, I was a little mixed on my feelings on this one. I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t really enjoy it; maybe it was a little too YA for me? As we entered the epilogue, I asked myself if I would be interested in listening to book 2, and when the answer turned out to be “no”, I think I realized this book just wasn’t for me.
Audiobook notes: I thought the narrator had a pleasant voice. She definitely portrayed the emotion and action well.
