Wilder Girls by Rory Power

3.0

This is, I think, another unfortunate case of the hype getting in the way of my enjoyment of the actual book.

Wilder girls is pitched as a queer, feminist, Lord of the Flies inspired sci-fi horror story. Which I already have mixed feelings on, but, again, the hype (also the cover is absolutely gorgeous). Everyone was like, it’s so good! You’ll absolutely fall in love!, and I was like, well, damn. It must be true.

I was expecting the writing style to fall more under magical realism, although that’s my bad and not an actual fault of the book. It just shocked me when I started reading and the text wasn’t at all like the cover made me presume it would be like? If that makes any sense?

As for characters, Byatt is literally my daughter. That’s where my attachment to the characters end. I found Hetty to be just there, and I couldn’t stand Reese most of the time.

Everything happened really fast. This book, in my opinion, is an example of how even if the characters have known each other before the novel takes place, if they don’t feel well developed, it can still feel insta-love-ish.

All the same, I was interested in the plot, and I did find myself flying through the ending. Although I felt it ended the way a chapter would have ended? Like, I turned the page, and it was just over.

The cover is still gorgeous though.
