It is ... sweet. Like.... way way too sweet. Everybody is just so kind and generous and look at this amazing queer community, with Perfect Representation. Don't get me wrong, I like seeing positive lgbt representation as much as the next person (probably more), but this is not positive representation... this is a perfect island where it never rains, the flowers bloom 12 months a year, birds don't poop, and the only mean people are Evil Straight Hipsters.
I enjoyed the exploration of Syd's gender, that was interesting. The recipes were also funny. It won't make you sad if you read it, probably, it is VERY warm and fuzzy and I could see it being comforting.
There is the issue of Syd's age, it felt really off. Beside the mention of sex, I would have found the reactions/thoughts/everything a lot more believable with a 13 yo character than 17, and I really don't see what the point was of having an older character (who behaved in every way as a young teen).
I skipped an extensive section in the middle, it was just.... not very interesting and I can't consume that much sugar in such a short time.
