It started as a fun, absurd romp. I couldn't understand the characters' motivations, but in a way that nothing could justify all the hijinks that happened, so it didn't matter. They were characters doing character stuff, and I would happily sit and watch. But halfway through the book, I started to realize that the text wanted me to take it much more seriously than what was reasonable to expect, with all the name-dropping of writers and philosophers, out-of-place sentimentality, and cheap ethics discussions. And so, the book did the worst thing it could have possibly done: it became boring.
