If you love The Wire, you have no damned excuse for not reading this book that preceded it--even if you watched the gradually-declining but initially fan-fucking-tastic NBC series adapted from it (so much more humanity, humor, hard knocks and heartbreak in the book). Also, the star of the book plays an actual quiet role on The Wire.
