Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

2.0

This book was a quick read in an unchallenging sort of way, not the "Oh my god this is great I need to know what happens next" way. The characters are heavily stereotyped caricatures--inattentive fumbling husband, psycho nagging wife, borderline abusive husband, pushover doormat wife, incompetent cops, perfectly in tune soulmates, incomparably generous doting mother, the list goes on. I feel the story could have been interesting if it actually did something with the stereotypes instead of exaggerating them so extensively that it bordered on ridicule. This book is a prime example of a rare instance in which I'm actually rooting for excessive changes in the movie because some major work needs to be done to bring any life to these characters.
