Where the Red Fern Grows
by Wilson Rawls
3.5 ⭐
“In his fighting heart, there was no fear.”
That ending definitely made me cry. The writing in this book was pretty good especially given that it's targeted towards children. I wasn't as invested in this book until the end because I couldn't relate to most of it especially all the coon hunting that was described in detail. I haven't owned a pet at any point so that was a bit hard to relate as well although the pure love between Billy and his hounds, the way it was described in the book was so pure and heartwarming. Every time I was left on the edge of my seat wondering if this would be the point where things would go downhill for them and felt such relief each time it wasn't. I did know beforehand that the book would have a sad ending but it still brought tears to my eyes. It's a golden book that can be read by any age.
“With a heavy heart, I turned and walked away. I knew that as long as I lived I'd never forget the two little graves and the sacred red fern.”
