Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

3.0

Trying to fill that Mercy Thompson void. We'll see how it goes.

Update: I'm finished, and it does not fill the void. I mostly liked it, but I also felt like it didn't really make sense. I'm hoping that a lot of the stuff I didn't understand (like why Kate was so valuable magically, and the different magical factions in the world) will be explained more in future books. Also, still not seeing why everyone loves Kate and Curran so much together. He's a jerk. Another thing that will hopefully change in future books. Finally, I should not have listened to the audio. The reader was really annoying. I realize this makes it sound like I didn't like the book at all. But it had loads of awesome potential, and some stuff that I really enjoyed. Fingers crossed for book 2.

Update again: I recently listened to the Graphic Audio version of the book, and I really enjoyed it. I honestly think they may have made some changes to make it more comprehensible? Or maybe I just understood it more because I have all the context now. In any case, it was a 4 star reread, but my initial impression remains that it's 3 stars for a first time cold read.
