The Second Deadly Sin by Åsa Larsson
4.0
Åsa Larsson is one of my favorite Swedish authors, I don't know that I've disliked anything she's written. Her newest book to be translated into English is as good as the rest. Prosecutor Rebecka Martinsson continues to be the primary focus of Larsson's novels, but she gives us glimpses into the lives of several of the people Martinsson works with, as well as two long-dead people connected to the crime at the center of the novel.
I love Rebecka Martinsson as a character because she's not perfect. She has flaws and depression and anxiety, but she's also pretty awesome. She keeps pushing and fighting for what's right and she doesn't give up. I also like her friends, Krister Eriksson (police dog handler) and Anna-Maria Mella (police officer) and their interactions with each other and the world they inhabit.
The crime itself is interesting, a little boy is at the heart of a family who keep being murdered and it's up to Martinsson, eventually, to solve the crime. She does this, but it's not without heartache and, in fact, the very end of the novel left me sobbing at my kitchen table. That being said, I eagerly look forward to the next Martinsson novel.
