The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
3.0

I'm torn with this book. On the one hand the fantasy aspects are utterly original and make you want to read on to learn about the mysteries of this planet. The world-building is drip-fed throughout the book so you are learning along the way, often alongside the characters. On the other hand, the writing is quite self-conscious and clunky, and I was convinced I wouldn't read the others in the series right up until the end as I didn't feel a connection with the characters. I just didn't feel most of their motivations, for example there are certain characters driving their actions that we never actually meet. Despite this, by the end I had decided to read on because I'm intrigued to learn more of this world and the characters we've only seen glimpses of.
