Nettle & Bone
by T. Kingfisher
T. Kingfisher has mastered this way of leading you down a path that seems really familiar, with lots of the archetypes you know and love, and then just when you think you know what's coming, hitting you with something absolutely absurd or terrifying. I mean seriously, parts of this book were the most heartwarming thing I'd ever read, like how Marra grew into her strength in order to save her sister, her love for Bonedog, sweet little Agnes just doing her best to be good with the evil magic she was born with . How does the same mind that wrote all that also come up with something as horrifying as the Toothdancer? or the fucking thief wheel ??? I mean she has range.
