The Terror
by Dan Simmons
First time reading Dan in years. I was an avid reader in the early 90s, loving Song of Kali, Carrion Comfort and of course Hyperion, Et. Al.
Coming back to him after all these years... I didn't know what expect. Although, as I attempt to describe it, I do think that it is Simmons at his best. Long, but satisfying. An engrossing, fully realised world, slightly outside of most people's experience, where the weather is almost a character. Like Carrion Comfort, he's happy to burn through characters. And while it starts out as a historical monster novel which would sit nicely alongside Dracula, he blends in mythology and creates something special.
Plus, as a Northern Canadian from wayback, I loved the setting.
