Down by the River

This is the sort of novel that reminds me why I read. It is beautifully written and structured. It deals with very real human issues in a nuanced, sophisticated (and at times, outraged) kind of way. It is not cozy or light, but is fully immersive and amply rewards close reading. I have no doubt it will reward repeated readings.
Because of the subject matter (which I won't go into to avoid spoilers), it is also the sort of novel that is at risk of being banned from libraries across the country. I live in Florida. People like Ron DeSantis must be resisted, defeated and removed from office.

Graphic: Incest, Toxic relationship, Religious bigotry
Moderate: Child abuse, Confinement, Miscarriage, Rape, Suicidal thoughts, Death of parent
Minor: Cancer, Confinement
While O'Brien never shies away from facing hard realities, nothing in this book could be considered gratuitous or pornographic.
