Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex by Anne Frank

4.0

The first part of the book are of Anne's short stories. They are quite simple in nature, nothing really spectacular but what struck me is how much it reflected the thoughts and feelings she had as a teenager. From common teenage fears of being accepted and keeping up kind appearances to more profound ones of poverty, war, life and death.

The second part are more of her journal entries and themed essays that was initially unpublished. Here we see more of her wit, charm and natural sass. We see the depth of her understanding at such hard times and at the same time her innocence of hope and faith.

I would say that Anne couldn't have a successful fiction writer, she was too honest and self-aware to not give herself away but she would have been a great essayist and/or humorist and she is.
