Great story. but the writing and pacing was all over the place.

I think this might be Shan's most interesting and intricate book but I don't think he was yet experienced enough to pull it off. Capac's character growth is the main storyline, with the mystery the backdrop. Yet both go no where for the majority of the book, only for everything to happen right at the end.

Shan means Capac to seem somewhat innocent but still interested in the violence of organised crime, a bit idealistic. Then we watch his change into a monster. However... it just happens in a few pages. One minute he'd never kill anyone, he's forced to for self defence... then he's a unfeeling monster.
I won't go into the mystery, only to say it's interesting but also resolves too easily and leaves the reader feeling a bit cheated.
