Likely a good fit for fans of the surreal violence of Hell's Paradise, though that one gave us a touch more character depth, or of Ajin, with nods to Parasyte-like creature design. A strange apocalyptic-ish story full of surreal body horror. Japan is invaded by giant, hypnotic creatures widely called gods, which can enslave you with a look, can't be seen on camera/video, and tend to kill people in spectacular fashion. Affected areas are designated inhabitable danger zones, and people who sneak in are assumed to be suicides. The story revolves around the meeting in a danger-zone of a girl looking for answers about her friend's disappearance and a researcher with the Anti-God Scientific Research Institute--but it turns out the girl has a dangerous secret that the Institute may want to use, which may be of use in killing off the gods.
The story leaned more into the violence (aka 'cool fights,' I guess) between fans/devotees of the dangerous gods and those involved in anti-gods research and defense, but I need more plot and/or character depth, so it didn't really keep my interest. The cat seemed a strange addition, borderline unnecessary (a tacked-on attempt at comic relief?). I liked the researcher Tokinaga (who wants to defeat the gods but isn't as ends-justify-the-means as some of his colleagues) and would like to learn more about him, and a development right at the last couple of pages makes me curious to see vol.2, but I'm not entirely sold on this series yet.
