A Girl Like You by Cari Scribner

4.0

I picked up this book because the author reached out to me and I read a book I normally wouldn’t have, and found myself pleasantly surprised.

A Girl Like You is about a twice divorcee named Jessica who wants to find love again and starts to delve into the world of online dating, as a 50-something year old woman.

I enjoyed reading about Jess. The wide range of characters she met kept me entertained, and I really enjoyed her relationship and interactions with her kids. I laughed, I smiled, and I even cried at the end because of a part relating to a dog that was emotional to me that I didn’t expect would be.

Despite this not being my usual genre, I enjoyed the book. It took me on a fun journey and some of the lives of some of the men she dated really fascinated me.

This would be a 4 star book except for one part that I can’t get over. At one point she went on a date with a guy who was standing in front of a lambo and holding a glass of champagne. When she asked what he’s toasting, he said he’s a real estate agent and wrapping up a huge deal of a half a million dollar condo in Manhattan. Now, I’ve never lived in Manhattan. Or NY for that matter. But I can tell you that it’s more expensive to live there then it is to live where I am, in Seattle, and I live in one of the top 5 most aggressive and expensive markets in the U.S. Now, for our market 500k is peanuts. Many realtors wouldn’t want to take a client who’s only buying a 500k house, because they feel that’s a tiny commission in a market where houses are double that easily. Manhattan is even MORE expensive then Seattle. A 500k condo is cheap. Why would a real estate agent be toasting that deal and calling it huge? Now if he was toasting a “huge” 2.5 million deal, that makes a lot more sense.

So that part bothered me enough to bring my rating down, but I really liked the book otherwise.
