Black River

Outstanding debut. This book came out in January and I have hardly heard anything about it, and that is a shame. Wes is a widow who is estranged from his stepson and not only does he have the grief of his wife dying to deal with but also the parole hearing of an inmate who attacked him during his days as a CO is coming up soon as well. Author has created a community of complex characters in a well paced and thoughtful story. No easy answers here and the people act in complicated but realistic ways. Also the author uses flashbacks in a really effective way that I won't say more about as to not ruin the reading experience. Highly recommend this book, would call it Western lit.
