I blame the editor. This book could have been cut in 1/2 by simply removing all the repetitive words. If that was supposed to be for emphasis it lost its value after chapter 5. I did like the short chapters though, they were  easy to read and I think that’s what kept me engaged in the book. However there was so much repetition that I think some of the chapters could have been removed without impacting the story. I couldn’t wait for him to just get to the point. Also how does the editor miss that Alberts name is changed to Alfred right at the climax? (Hopefully that was just my copy).

I did like all the characters and overall liked the plot and premise of the book. It made sense sending Abbey all over the world but it also made the story line feel  disjointed with such large gaps between chapters. I liked meeting the different truth-sayers around and it gave more depth to the silence vs magic conflict in the book.

I also think there were too many themes the author was trying to touch on and this made the book feel less refined. The juxtaposition of magic and science, the implications of British colonization and slavery, the unavoidable influence of technology, the moral obligation humans have to each other, the horrors of war and the connection of cultures through similar beliefs, just to name a few.
